Eric Grina was invited to a going away party for one of his relatives who was called up for active duty. They talked him into playing in a Texas Holdem tournament. He had never played the game before but they showed him the rules and as luck would have it he won the dang thing. After that he was hooked and started going to some of the local bar league tournaments and was doing quite well. Most of the tournaments had an opportunity to win a seat at the world series of poker. They would collect points and then you could qualify for a regional tournament and then from there you get into a state tournament and so on. The odds of winning that were pretty low and he figured it would be more fun to play for something every night instead of for a chance to a chance to a chance. That being said Eric decided to start his own league where you have a chance to win something every night and the Satellite Poker League was born.
Eric made a model that was fun for everyone and became a great marketing tool for the bars that signed up. Eric was known for making a business from his hobby. This was about 1 of 5 businesses that Eric has started over the years.
Eric Grina was the head engineer for SMT, Inc in Detroit Lakes MN. He was extremely talented and very creative. It seems like many engineers are kind of introverted, not Eric. He was extremely extroverted and loved to socialize with people. That was a big reason why this league has seen so much success. Eric was fun to hang around and had a great sense of humor. He would literally do just about anything for a laugh.
